The interPLAY Orchestra is Performance-based
Join Us as an Adult With and Without Cognitive and/or Physical Disabilities

Guidelines

Most interPLAY Orchestra members have moderate to mild cognitive disabilities that often make it difficult to learn to read and play music in the conventional way. We give them the opportunity to express themselves in the universally understood language of music.

The interPLAY Orchestra employs unconventional teaching techniques that enhance cognitive, social and motor skills. Many of our players do not have access to therapies that address their continual need for cognitive and physical development.

The Orchestra plays a wide repertoire of music including classical, jazz, Broadway, folk, light and grand opera, vocal and drumming. Orchestra members learn to play professional percussion, tonal and folk instruments from around the world and enjoy the exhilaration of vocal music, solo and ensemble.

Who Can Join?

Adults ages 21 and over with cognitive disabilities are eligible to interview with staff. Minimum requirements for participation are the ability to:

  1. Count to 10 expressively or receptively
  2. Understand and follow the verbal and gestural cues of the conductor
  3. Produce sound from an instrument
  4. Regulate behavior during rehearsals and concert performances

Orchestra members must have reliable transportation to attend weekly rehearsals and concerts.

Currently, we have adult music performers with PRIMARY intellectual disabilities, and some with additional physical impairments such as cerebral palsy, neurological disorders, traumatic brain injury, visual challenges, dyslexia, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy.

Please contact us for further information and to sign-up.
